The first is Alice Munro's short story collection Runaway. People speak of Alice Munro's work admiringly--reverently--kind of like they do with John Cheever or Anton Chekov. Except that I've never really read any of them. Then, in school, I was assigned a few of Munro's stories to read. They were amazing. I found one of her books at a used bookstore for $1 (if there's one place I'm on high alert for divine signs, it's at a used bookstore). I bought it and talked my mentor into assigning it to me for the semester. Two birds, as it were. Anyway. It was incredible. And I don't doubt that any other story collection you can find of hers will be just as life changing. In her own words, which I've stolen from one of the stories: Runaway is "a great crippling whack in the chest." And I mean that as a compliment.
The second diamond in the rough is HBO's
Dave cried. Just saying.
Now, read! Watch! And let's discuss.

Temple Grandin was great. I'll have to check my library or paperback swap for Alice Munro.
saw an cable special on it. Amazing.
I saw that Temple Grandin movie!!! It was one of those, "Hey, is that Claire Danes?.... I'll watch for a second" moments that ended up in me recording the whole thing and watching it twice! It was incredible!
I haven't read Alice Munro, but I have seen Temple Grandin. GREAT, GREAT, GREAT movie!!! Claire Danes did an outstanding job. Wish more people had seen it - there's almost no one I can talk to about it.
Also, have lately been into books with settings in the Middle East. Recently read (well, not read - listened to the audio book, unabridged versions only) "The Blood Of Flowers". Beautiful, colorful, descriptive story set in 17th century Persia (Iran).
The second one, which I'm listening to now, is "A Thousand Splendid Suns", by Khaled Hosseini. I didn't read his first book "The Kite Runner", but saw the movie, which I also LOVED.
Next on my list (to actually read, since I have the book) is "Reading Lolita In Tehran". Have you read any of these? Let me know what you think if you have!
