So, I just made this my facebook status, but what the hay?? This calls for an over-announcement! Masterpiece Theatre is showing a new version of Jane Austen's Emma tonight on PBS. See for yourself:
I will likely miss this, as I don't really have a T.V. Still, I'm excited about the prospect of another (ninth? tenth?) adaptation of this novel. I just can't help myself. I heart Austen adaptations! And if I were more techno-savvy, I'd make that into a flash button for my sidebar.
I've pretty much liked all of the Austen movies. Except Masterpiece Theatre's most recent Persuasion. It was all that loud breathing of Anne's. And maybe the fact that perhaps my most favorite movie of all time is the 1995 version of the same. Anyway, I'm borrowing this from an article I read, but what are your favorite Austen adaptations? * Let's discuss!
*Jeff, save yourself the soapbox: We all know your views on Laurence Olivier.

The 1995 Persuasion is my all time favorite adaptation, it is also my favorite novel. I never saw the newest Persuasion but heard through the grapevine that it not that great I will probably still see it when I get the chance.
I've actually seen this Emma. I too have no t.v. so I watch all my shows on the computer. My favorite site is watch-series.com and one day I was browsing and stumbled across this Emma. It's a decent adaptation better than Gwyneth's IMHO. It's four hours long which I liked as they cover more ground but I think they take too many liberties with the storyline. For instance, they portray Emma, Frank and Jane Fairfax as connected as children through the loss of their mothers and imply they are all connected because of this loss. This bothered me as that isn't even hinted at in the novel. But every adaptation takes liberties I suppose. Here's the link so you can watch Emma at your leisure.

Nice! You've just saved me the agony of a Netflix wait! Thanks for the review!
I agree Lacy, the Amanda Root/Ciaran Hinds version is the best.
And what do you think of the 'Return to Cranford' they are showing over at PBS Masterpiece (online). IMHO, it's not nearly as good as the original Cranford. I mean what's up with Martha dying in childbirth. Ugh.
I'm going to be watching The Bicycle Thieves (Italian, older movie, won best foreign film some years back). It comes highly recommended. I'll keep you posted, or if you find it and watch it before me, keep me posted.
I would like to add which Austen adaptation I am not overly thrilled with. I don't LOVE the some what recent P and P with Keira Knightly. I've tried watching it a couple of times and I am not thrilled with Knightly's performance-at all! Everyone else seems to love it though, and prefers it over the A&E version, so I suppose I am one of only a few fans who has stayed true to Colin Firth?
I'll start with a full, and somewhat embarrassing disclaimer--I have never read an Austen book. I have, however, watched several Austen movies throughout the years. Most of them being when I was younger and probably didn't appreciate them as much as I would now. So, I can't really say which is my favorite adaptation. The most recent Austen movie I watched was actually a BBC series of Pride and Prejudice, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I watched in on netflix instant play and I think it has five parts.
Just watching that clip makes me want to talk the way they do! My fav has been the A&E spoken of already of P and P.
so i totally watched this last night! I was so mad when it just ended....i went straight to the computer to make sure there would be more episodes. There are :)
